KeyCDN Launches New POP in Brazil

KeyCDN is dedicated to expansion throughout the globe and we are excited to announce our new point of presence (POP) in São Paulo, Brazil! This is our first POP in South America and your visitors in that location should immediately see a dramatic improvement in latency and throughput. The new POP is now in production and has been automatically added to all existing Zones.

POP in Brazil extends content delivery to South America

KeyCDN is dedicated to providing a strong presence throughout the globe and this new POP in Brazil will be our 24th location. We are excited for this expansion into South America as it is one region we have not been able to reach yet. It is very important to us to continue our location development as this provides you and your visitors with even lower latency and higher throughput. The POP is located in a premium SSAE 16 compliant data center in São Paulo, Brazil.

Based on global measurements, this new POP in Brazil has lowered latency by over 88 ms! The KeyCDN latency for end clients in Brazil is now approximately 60 ms, down from 148 ms.

The growth of the internet is booming in South America as broadband providers continue to expand and people are now browsing the web on not one, but multiple devices.

In 2014 Latin American as a whole grew in IP traffic by 25%, with traffic growth for the mobile Internet at an incredible 87%.

- Cisco VNI report

Brazil alone currently has more than 115 million internet users, which is over 57% of the population. The growth of internet users in Brazil has risen around 10% since 2012 and it is ranked 5th among the countries with the most Internet connections.

South America has over 249 million internet users, with Brazil making up for 50% of the total population. And even though internet users are growing fast, the average connection speed in Brazil is only 3.6 Mbps. With speeds still lower than a majority of the world, this increases the importance of utilizing a content delivery network to decrease latency for those users.

How to check if content is delivered from São Paulo

Each POP adds the HTTP header X-Edge-Location to assets that are delivered. In this case, it will be brsp. The first two letters stand for the country TLD, the third and fourth letter for the city. You can quickly check using Chrome DevTools or KeyCDN's Website Speed Test tool.
